Starbucks
From WhyItIsTerrible
Starbucks is an American coffee shop company. It is terrible for the following reasons.
- Starbucks stores push mom and pop coffee shops out of business, reducing diversity and sending some profits out of local communities and into distant corporate coffers. Starbucks even tries to pretend to be a local shop by using unique names and featuring local decorations. [1]
- Starbucks gift cards come with mandatory arbitration clauses requiring that disputes be mediated in Seattle, Washington by a company chosen by Starbucks, as well as forbidding class action lawsuits. [2]
- In 2006, Starbucks blocked the Ethiopian government's attempts to trademark certain coffees, depriving Ethiopians of the rights accorded to growers of specialty varieties around the world. [3]
- Starbucks requires consumers to use disposable cups and will not fill your reusable thermos instead. This is wasteful. [4]
- Starbucks coffee tastes bad. [5]
- Starbucks customers and employees are both frequently obnoxious and pretentious.[6]
- Starbucks uses idiosyncratic names for their drinks sizes. These are confusing and annoying. [7]
